Ceramic Crowns

All ceramic crowns help protect teeth while looking healthy and natural at the same time, so dental restorations are nearly invisible. At his Greenwich Village, NY, office, Dr. Brisman uses state-of-the-art materials and techniques for crowns that offer optimal protection and can be tinted to match your surrounding teeth.

All Ceramic Crowns

What is a dental crown?

A dental crown is a hard, protective covering that goes over your entire tooth to provide added stability and cover imperfections like cracks, chips or pits. They're often used to provide support for teeth that have very large fillings, and they can also be used to improve the shape, size or color of a tooth, especially after a root canal. Crowns are often used to protect the teeth on either side of a bridge, and they provide the “tooth” portion of dental implants. Ceramic crowns can be tinted so they look just like a natural tooth.

How is a crown applied?

Most crowns are applied in two visits. During the first visit, the tooth is prepared for the crown. Preparation involves removing some of the existing tooth material to make room for the crown so your other teeth aren't crowded. Dr. Brisman will make an impression of the tooth which will be used to make the final crown. Then, a temporary crown will be fitted to protect the tooth while the final crown is being made. At the next visit, the crown will be cemented in place and shaped to achieve a comfortable fit.

Do crowns require special care?

No, you can care for ceramic crowns the same way you care for your natural teeth, with regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups to ensure the crown stays properly seated.

How long will my crown last?

Ceramic crowns are made of very durable material, and when properly cared for, they can last as long as 10 or 15 years. Most insurance companies will cover the cost of replacing a crown as long as it has lasted at least five years. Avoiding habits like tooth clenching and grinding can help ensure your crown lasts as long as possible.
