Teeth Bleaching

by David L. Brisman, DMD

Will bleaching hurt my teeth?

Today's professional whitening techniques, including in-office procedures and take-home kits provided by your dentist, offer safe, effective whitening that's developed to be gentle on the tooth structure while still getting rid of yellowing and discoloration that can make your teeth look dingy, stained and old.

I have a lot of restorations like crowns and bridges. Can my teeth still be whitened?

Yes, today's professional whitening agents are developed to be safe even with most dental restorations. In a very few cases, some whitening agents may cause bonding adhesives to soften temporarily. If you have bridges, crowns or other restorations, Dr. Brisman can evaluate your teeth and make recommendations to protect your teeth when needed.

Does bleaching cause teeth to become sensitive?

In some people with very sensitive teeth, whitening procedures may cause temporary sensitivity that resolves within a day or two. One of the benefits of in-office whitening procedures is that they can be completed in a single visit, which means the risk of sensitivity is minimized. If you have sensitive teeth, one of the best ways to avoid sensitivity with bleaching is to have an evaluation beforehand to look for any chips or cracks and have them corrected before your whitening treatment.

Can I whiten my teeth at home?

Yes! In addition to in-office teeth whitening procedures, Dr. Brisman also offers take-home kits so you can perform touch-up treatments to maintain your great-looking smile in between regular whitening procedures. Both in-office whitening and professional take-home kits provide superior results compared to over-the-counter bleaching kits, which can cause increased sensitivity and other issues. Plus, because the take-home kits are designed to work in conjunction with the in-office treatments, you can expect more consistent, natural-looking results compared to the kits you buy in your local drugstore.
